I am duly in receipt of your letter of the 29th ult. in which you advise that Sir Cecil Clementi would like to know if there is any truth in the rumour that this Company is making a loan of $5,000,000 to the Peking Government. This rumour appears to have emanated from Japanese sources and actually was to the effect that the loan was being made by the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China and British-American Tobacco Co. (China) Ltd. There is absolutely no truth in
